First Aid of the Mental Health Variety
Studies have shown that mental health first aid training makes people feel more comfortable managing a crisis situation and helps build mental health literacy–helping the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness. We will take a wide-angle lens look at recognizing potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and self-injury. We will learn a 5-step action plan to help individuals in crisis connect with appropriate professional help & how to question someone who you feel might be suicidal.

Notes of HOPE
Join us for an inspiring day of postcard design at Dark Horse coffee.
Notes of HOPE is a project that was started by Robby Borders. Robby has been impacted by bullying and suicide throughout his life. These experiences have motivated him to display a positive message on a sign that he holds on the street of Park City, UT for anyone passing by. While not everyone can stand on the corner of the street holding a sign like Robby has done, everyone can send a greeting card to reach out and remind people that they are important.
Robby has been working with volunteers to expand his message by designing greeting cards which helps build human contact and meaningful relationships. Volunteers are welcome to take the cards they make or they can donate the decorated cards back to help fundraise for "Smile, You are Beautiful" dog tags, stickers, signs, and travel expenses as Robby travels the country speaking to youth and sharing his message.
Shannon Decker, LMU Class of 2005, will be on site for the project. She is the executive director and co-founder of The Speedy Foundation, which works to promote mental health education and advocate for suicide prevention.

What is the Paper Tigers Documentary?
Paper Tigers takes a look at the lives of six students at Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla, Walla, WA. The documentary follows students over the course of a school year, as the staff implement a new approach to discipline, one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgement and suspension. Paper Tigers is the story of how one school was able to make a dramatic change and how just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person's life.
