'The Upstanders' Film Screening

The Upstanders examines cyber-bullying from the perspectives of the bully, the victim and the onlooker, providing practical tips and resources to change the narrative – to stand up, speak out and support – and become an Upstander, not a Bystander.

Join us in Boise on November 17th to screen this powerful film and join in a community conversation. Our goal for this film is to inspire adults throughout the community to feel empowered to help stand-up solutions to bullying for our youth and beyond!

Introductory Workshop to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - Boise, ID

Mindfulness can help us get out of our own heads, be more present in our bodies, and not be so consumed by thoughts.

Is your level of reactivity higher than you would like? Mindfulness can help us learn to relate to small irritations and greater challenges in new ways and with less reactivity.

Some other potential benefits of mindfulness and meditation practice include:

  • Increased ability to deal with both short and long-term stress

  • decreases in both physical and physiological symptoms

  • a strong sense of relaxation

  • reduction in pain

  • increased ability to deal with chronic pain

Within this workshop, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience some mindfulness meditation techniques

  • Gain a clearer idea of what mindfulness is

  • Learn where to find 8-week MBSR workshops

These workshops are for you if:

  • you have no idea what Mindfulness is

  • you’re struggling with stress

  • you regularly feel anxious

  • you suffer from recurrent depression

  • you have been trying to learn mindfulness from a book or an app but could use a little more guidance

  • you have a health condition you are navigating

  • you have previously had some mindfulness and meditation training but could use a refresher

MBSR is not therapy or medical treatment nor is it meant to replace therapy or medical treatment. It is often used as a complementary aid to medical or psychological treatment.

Description

Youth Mental Health First Aid consists of 6.5 hours of instructor-led training.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.

Learn how to identify and support an adolescent experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis. This training is designed to teach parents, teachers, coaches, and anyone who regularly interacts with young people, how to identify and support an adolescent in crisis and thus reduce their risk of suicide. Anyone 18 or older can take YMHFA, but it is recommended for those who regularly have contact with young people ages 12 to 18.

Mental Health First Aid was created in Australia in 2000 by Betty Kitchener, an educator and mental health consumer, and Professor Tony Jorm, a mental health researcher. In 2008, the National Council, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Missouri Department of Mental Health brought Mental Health First Aid to the United States.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Youth Mental Health First Aider.

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth.

  • Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development.

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations.

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.

  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.

Warning: Please reflect on your own personal mental/emotional state before registering. If you are recently bereaved or currently struggling, the content of this training might be too fresh or raw. It is recommended that participants give 3-6 months' time for processing/recovering before attending this training.
