Idaho Steelheads Military Appreciation Weekend

Boise, ID (11/01/16)— The Idaho Steelheads announced on Tuesday that they will recognize the  US Armed Forces during their annual Military Appreciation Night- presented by Sport Clips- at CenturyLink Arena, when the Steelheads host the Adirondack Thunder on November 12th. The Steelheads, partnering with St. Luke’s and The Speedy Foundation, will honor service men and women with custom patriotic jerseys to be worn for both weekend games on November 11th and 12th.

Fans will have an opportunity during the weekend games to bid on the Steelheads’ game-worn, custom-made jerseys during the St. Luke’s Military Jersey Auction, a silent auction held during the Friday and Saturday games on the arena concourse. Bidding will conclude at the start of the third period on the 12th, with winners earning not only the jersey but also the opportunity to receive it from the player himself.

The team will also raffle off a jersey signed by every member of the team. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Speedy Foundation.

The Speedy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization named after three-time Olympian, Jeret "Speedy" Peterson of Boise, Idaho and Park City, Utah. Founded in 2011, the foundation seeks to prevent suicide, promote conversations to end stigma, and support mental health education. The funds raised during Military Appreciation weekend will benefit the foundation’s creation and launch of Mental Health First Aid training specific for military members, veterans, and their families, as well as suicide prevention efforts in Idaho.

"The Speedy Foundation is incredibly honored to partner with St. Luke's and the Idaho Steelheads to raise funds and awareness for Veterans and Military Families,” said Shannon Decker, Executive Director and co-founder of The Speedy Foundation. “While military service often fosters resilience in individuals and families, some may experience mental health or substance use challenges. It is essential that our communities be prepared to identify and support those who have served our country. Mental Health First Aid is a way to increase the level of baseline knowledge about mental health and substance use concerns and, if necessary, to help individuals get connected to care."

This year’s Military Appreciation Jerseys have been designed by Steelheads Account Executive Erik Diehl. Erik designed the team’s “Pink in the Rink” jerseys last season.

“Last season during this auction, we raised over $17,000 for veterans health,” said Eric Trapp, President of the Steelheads. “We are proud that our fans are so passionate about supporting our veterans and it’s always a special opportunity for our organization to honor our military and help them live healthy lives back here at home.”

“We are honored to work with St. Luke’s and The Speedy Foundation in these efforts.”

Tickets are still available for fans who wish to attend either game during Military Appreciation Weekend. Friday night games at CenturyLink Arena are 4-for$48 Family Fun Fridays, when fans receive four tickets, four Double R Ranch hot dogs, and four small Pepsis for $48. Contact the Idaho Steelheads at 208-383-0080 for ticket information or log on to www.idahosteelheads.com.

What is the Paper Tigers Documentary?

Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students and in the process has become a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families.

Jim Sporleder, principal at Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, Washington, a school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, discovered that stressed brains can’t learn.

Following six students over the course of a school year, Principal Sporleder and his staff tried a new approach to discipline. It was based on understanding and treatment rather than judgement and suspension.

Three years later, the number of fights at Lincoln Alternative High School were reduced by 75% and the graduation rate was dramatically increased. Paper Tigers is the story of how one school was able to make a dramatic change and how just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person’s life.

YMHFA training participants learn about some of the most common signs of mental health issues, how to identify warning signs that indicate an individual may be at risk of harm or suicide, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance and encourage the person to seek professional help.

Question. Persuade. Refer. | Park City, UT

Question. Persuade. Refer. | Park City, UT

What is QPR Training? QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying, "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor. QPR can be learned in our Gatekeeper course in as little as one hour.

Who needs to know QPR? Suicidal thoughts are common.  Suicidal acts, threats and attempts are less common, but much more frequent than most people realize.  Suicide is the most common psychiatric emergency and the 11th leading cause of death in America.  Suicidal thinking, feeling and behavior are not rare.  For example: If you are a middle-aged or older adult, you probably know someone who has made a suicide attempt.  You may even have known someone who completed suicide and it is very likely you know someone who has, or is, thinking about suicide.

If you are a professional caregiver, police officer, fireman, minister, priest, rabbi, school nurse, coach, youth leader, paramedic, high school counselor, case manager, volunteer or paid staff in any of a hundred different kinds of human service organizations, you will very likely have firsthand contact with suicidal people.  Since it is impossible for family doctors, counselors and mental health professionals to know everyone who needs help, the answer to the question: Who needs to know QPR?  Everyone

In a little over one hour, you can become a “Gatekeeper.” According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn: As someone who may be in the best possible position to prevent suicide, you will find that QPR is designed to help you help someone who may be considering suicide. QPR consists of three life-saving skills.  How to:

  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
  • Offer hope
  • Get help and save a life

REGISTER HERE

The course is limited to a maximum of 30 and minimum of 10 gatekeepers. Gatekeepers will receive a QPR booklet. Cost is free. The approximate cost for a one-two hour CPR certification course ranges from $25-60. The approximate cost for the QPR training is $30. If you are able to make a donation, please click HERE. Your kindness touches many lives.

"Smile, You Are Beautiful" Project with Robby Borders

Saturday, September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day

  • 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM | Sign Making Party | 638 Coalition View Court
    • Park on the street and bring sharpies, foam core board & positive slogans. We'll have coffee and treats.  We'll head downtown around 10:45 to share our messages of hope with the PC community.
  • 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM | Line the Streets with Signs | Main Street - Kimball Junction in Park City
    • A note from Robby: My name is Robby Borders and I have been bullied and felt suicidal. I hold a sign that says “smile, you are beautiful” for 7-9 hours a day to show other people that they are beautiful no matter what happens in life or what they go through. The reason why I am asking for people to help is because suicide is number 1 in Utah and September 10th is Suicide Awareness Day. My plan is to get over 200 people to help and go from Main Street to Kimball Junction by holding a sign that will make someone’s day like for example I believe in you, keep being you, be yourself, smile you are beautiful and so on. September 10th is a Saturday and it will be from 11-2.
